The objective of the game is to solve all 30 available caves. To solve a cave, the player must collect at least the required number of diamonds from within the cave in a limited period of time. Falling boulders and enemies can kill the player, decrementing his/her life-count and returning him/her to the beginning of the current cave.
Rockford can move up, down, left and right wherever there is empty space (yellow) or dirt (green). He can pick diamonds, push or kick boulders left & right. He should beware of falling diamonds or boulders, flying fireflies or butterflies.
Rockford can loose his life by a diamond or a boulder falling on his head, or by getting in contact with firefly or butterfly. He can also be trapped by falling boulders.
Set piece characters:
Butterflies – creatures that move in predictable patterns and can kill Rockford by touching him. If they are hit by a boulder or a diamond, they are transformed into up to nine diamonds.
Fireflies – creatures that move in predictable patterns and can kill Rockford by touching him.
Amoeba – this creature is harmless to Rockford, and if surrounded (by boulders, Rockford, walls) fast enough, turns into diamonds. If it grows too large, it turns into boulders.
Crystal™ – Rocky’s sister. Rocky needs to rescue her, but is able to found her only in the last cave.
Rocky can collect and use the following tools & features for solving the cave:
The Kick feature – enables players to kick boulders and bombs across the screen, until they are stopped by another object. (The ability to kick is unlimited and can be used by the player at any time.)
Bombs – explode when they fall or if kicked or something falls on it. (These must first be collected before they can be used. Each can only be used once.)
The Grab or Push feature – enables the player to push (a Boulder or Bomb) or grab (Diamonds, Dirt, Power Ups) without moving.
Hammers – destroys a boulder (These must first be collected before they can be used. Each can only be used once.)
Rotation – rotates the cave 90° degrees; non-stationary objects fall down after rotation changing the cave’s layout. (These must first be collected before they can be used. Each can only be used once.)
Magic Wall – while it remains active, all boulders falling onto and through it (space must be clear below the Magic Wall) will be transformed into diamonds. Magic Wall is activated when a boulder or diamond falls on it and is activated only a definite amount of time as set by the cave. (Watch out! Diamonds can be converted into boulders if one is not careful.)
The Explore feature – pauses the game and permits scrolling of the entire playfield to plan one’s strategy.
The Escape feature – forfeits one life but restarts the cave.
Rocky faces the following threats throughout the game:
Falling boulders – a boulder that falls down on Rocky kills him.
Exploding bombs – a bomb that explodes near Rocky also kills him.
Butterflies and Fireflies – if either one of these touches Rocky, he dies.
Amoebas – grows slowly (at first) and, if it is not contained, it will eventually turn into numerous boulders and might trap Rocky or block the exit.
Growing Walls – expand vertically or horizontally if the space next to it has been cleared. It is capable of trapping Rocky or blocking the cave’s exit.
Brick Walls – Beware! Items on the edge of these fall off; and, they can block your way or kill Rocky if they fall on him.
